5 Ways to Reduce Screen Time for Kids Under 10

Are you struggling to pull your child away from a screen? You’re not alone. With devices everywhere, it’s easy for kids to get locked into a digital trance. But breaking the habit doesn’t always have to mean conflict or power struggles.

Here are five gentle, effective strategies to help your child disconnect from screens—and reconnect with you, play, and the world around them.

1. Ask for Their Help

Examples:

  • “I need your help mixing this batter, your muscles are stronger than mine!”
  • “Can you be my special helper and set the table like a restaurant?”
  • “I can’t find my other sock, can you be my detective?”

Why it works: Kids love feeling helpful and included. Turning off the screen becomes easier when they’re invited to be part of something meaningful.

2. Give a Timed Challenge

Examples:

  • “Let’s see who can put away the most toys in 1 minute. Ready, set, go!”
  • “Can you build a fort before I finish folding the towels?”
  • “Draw me something special to hang up on the wall in under one minute!”

Why it works: A countdown adds just enough urgency to capture their attention—and snap them out of a screen spiral. Plus, it feels like a game.

3. Pull Out a Surprise or Forgotten Toy

Examples:

  • “I found something under the sofa you’ve been looking for… want to see what it is?”
  • “I brought out the kinetic sand! Want to make something with me?”

Why it works: Kids are naturally drawn to novelty. Reintroducing old toys or sensory activities offers that dopamine boost they crave—without needing a screen.

4. Invite Them Outside

Examples:

  • “Let’s go see if any flowers bloomed today.”
  • “Want to dig a hole for this seed and check it every day to see if it grows?”
  • “I’ll water this side, you do that one.”

Why it works: Nature has a calming, regulating effect. Even five minutes outdoors can reset your child’s mood and help break the screen cycle.

5. Create a Cozy Moment

Examples:

  • “Climb into the blanket fort, I’m reading your favorite book.”
  • “Can I tell you a story I just made up about you and a dragon?”
  • “Let’s play ‘what animal am I?’ and take turns acting silly.”

Why it works: Screens offer stimulation but real connection is more powerful. When kids feel safe, seen, and engaged, they won’t need a device to stay entertained.

Kids don’t want to be entertained, they want to be included. Just a few intentional shifts like these five ideas can go a long way in helping your child build healthier habits.
